You’ve probably seen the word trans* before and went to the bottom of the page only to find no asterisk with an explanation, so you’re left wondering, “why is that even there?”

Well, in simple terms the asterisk after the trans* is placed there in an effort to be more inclusive of all genders. It’s an umbrella term for all the genders that are on the spectrum that aren’t necessarily a trans man or a trans woman. As a society, when we speak of trans* issues, we tend to lump everyone that’s not cisgender into one category, and in a way we disregard the diversity that comes within the trans* community. Not only are there transgender individuals but some people identify as genderqueer, genderfluid, non-binary, genderless, agender, non-gendered, third gender, two-spirit, or bigender.
