When it comes to condoms there are a variety of options and materials that a person can choose from. The most common material for condoms is latex, however if someone is allergic to latex their choices for condoms may be limited. The most common alternative to latex condoms are polyurethane condoms, and since 2008 polyisoprene condoms.
Polyisoprene (pronounced as pol·y·i·so·prene) condoms are made of synthetic latex, meaning that this type of latex is man-made and all the allergen contents of rubber are removed. Currently there are only two brands that manufacture these types of condoms Lifestyles (Skyn) and Durex (Avanti). These types of condoms are just as effective as latex condoms when used correctly and consistently.
There are several perks of polyisoprene or non-latex condoms:
- An option for people that are allergic to latex, or anyone that wants to use them
- More stretchy and softer (when compare to latex condoms)
- May have a more natural feeling
- And they can prevent sexually transmitted infections and pregnancy if used correctly
Whichever type of condoms a person chooses, it’s important that that they are used correctly and consistently. There are many different types of condoms out there, so find the one that works best for you, and your partner.
